    Description

Extremely rare, and very collectable, Western Cutlery, ORIGINAL, red handled bird and trout hunting knife.
This is a model 48, with saber grind blade.  The blade is near mint,  totally full, with no signs of gouges and poor sharpening marks. There are some light sharpening marks if you look very carefully.  These knives are quite collectable because of their small size which fits nicely on a belt loop.
This is a contract knife,  which is stamped "WESTERN AUTO",  a stand-alone auto parts and accessories store which existed all across the United States during the 1940's and 50's.  At one time, they had 1200 retail locations.
This knife was obviously made by Western Cutlery, Boulder Colorado, as evidenced by its pommel, guard, use of spacers, and shape of the blade.
Uniquely,  these knives had a very specific spacer pattern which was different then the standard bird and trout knife bearing the Western Boulder stamp.
Also, these knives used aluminum guards instead of Western's normal brass guard.
In the most notable unique feature was the sheath itself.  Instead of Western's traditional "oak leaf" design,  These knives had a sheath which showed a pond of pussy willows.   The sheath is original to this knife, and shows some wear, and a slight cut on the back side,
These unique features make the Western Auto knife very rare and extremely collectable.
AS MENTIONED,  THIS KNIFE HAS ORIGINAL RED HANDLES,  NOT SOME FAKE FANCY PLASTIC.  (one small gouge in the handle area)
