Description
This item is an Official Philatelic Document issued by the government of France in tribute to Charles A. Lindbergh, the first man ever to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. The document bears an official French commemorative airmail stamp (Sc #C49) depicting both the "Spirit of St. Louis", Lindbergh's small silver monoplane, and the "White Bird", a plane flown by French pilots Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli in an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Atlantic. The airmail stamp bears a first day cancellation dated 4 June 1977 at the Bourget Airfield, where Lindbergh landed after completing his 33 1/2-hour crossing. The document also contains an engraved proof of the original die from which the stamp was produced and the official seal of the French PTT (French Postal Department) assuring the authenticity of this Official Philatelic Document. A limited number of these documents were made available exclusively to the Postmasters of America subscribers.
