Description
1906 Springfield 03 WWI bayonet and sheath by Rock Island Arsenal, Il.. My father was a US 3rd Cavalry private in Texas in 1917 when his troop was shipped to France without horses. He had his left leg amputated there due to a shot to the knee and managed to smuggle this bayonet back with his duffle to family in New Jersey. It has been with me in California since 1960. The Rock Island Arsenal, on the boarder of Il. and Iowa, is still in use as HQ of US 1st Army and still produces armaments. The leather, in wonderful condition, is also from that same arsenal, but is marked 1907. These two pieces were then combined and issued to troops in service. I do not know if this set was with him in Texas or was issued as they boarded the ship for Le Harve. On Aug-11-21 at 13:02:19 PDT, seller added the following information:
The scabbard has a small opening as a drain hole to release water if dunked.
